Mindful Movement: Reducing Chronic Pain through Education and Activity

The pain and stiffness of arthritis may make you hesitant to participate in exercise classes and it may seem best to rest. However, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) physical activity may be just the thing.  In fact, if you have arthritis, participating in joint-friendly physical activity can improve your arthritis pain, function, mood, and quality of life.

Being physically active can also delay the onset of arthritis-related disability and help people with arthritis manage other chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and obesity.

In addition, studies suggest that participation in the arts can help to ease arthritis pain and symptoms. Music and dance can help to improve mood, reduce feelings of stress and depression as well as providing fun and engaging forms of physical activity.

This class offers an online, self-paced modules course for those 18 and over and is designed to help manage arthritis and chronic pain through education on joint protection, self-care, stress management and appropriate levels of physical activity. This program can help with pain relief, joint stiffness, improved flexibility, increased strength, improved functional ability, better mood, less stress, better balance, less risk for chronic illnesses associated with a sedentary lifestyle, and increased confidence in the ability to exercise safely.

The self-paced modules can be combined with online or in person physical activity classes offered in a variety of levels and intensities so you can find the right level for you. Health coaches are available to check in weekly (or less often) through phone calls, text messages or Zoom meetings to help you navigate the program.

This program is supported through a generous grant through the Utah Department of Health and Human Services.
